Bronx, USA, Thu, 27 Jul 2023 14:10:02 / Comserve Inc. / -- Under the terms of the agreement, Intel will manufacture custom 5G SoCs (System-on-Chip) for Ericsson, enabling the development of highly differentiated products for the future 5G infrastructure.

Ericsson and Intel will expand their partnership by optimizing 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors with Intel® vRAN Boost for Ericsson's cloud RAN solutions, improving network capacity, power efficiency, flexibility and scalability for mobile network operators.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Intel have announced a strategic collaboration to leverage Intel's 18A process and manufacturing technology for Ericsson's future next-generation optimized 5G infrastructure. Under the terms of the agreement, Intel will manufacture custom 5G SoCs (System-on-Chip) for Ericsson to develop highly differentiated products for the future 5G infrastructure. In addition, Ericsson and Intel will expand their collaboration to optimize 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors with Intel® vRAN Boost for Ericsson's cloud Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions to enable mobile network operators to increase network capacity and energy efficiency while maintaining a achieve greater flexibility and scalability.

"Ericsson has a long history of working closely with Intel, and we are excited to extend this further by leveraging Intel to manufacture our future 5G custom SoCs on the 18A process node, which is in line with Intel's long-term strategy Ericsson stands for a more resilient and sustainable supply chain," said Fredrik Jejdling, Executive Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson. "Furthermore, we will extend our collaboration announced at MWC 2023 to work with the ecosystem to accelerate the adoption of industrial-scale open RAN (Open Radio Access Networks) using standard Intel Xeon-based platforms."

"As we continue to develop our collaboration, this is a significant milestone for Ericsson to work broadly on the optimized next-generation 5G infrastructure. This agreement illustrates and strengthens our shared vision to innovate and transform network connectivity growing customer confidence in our process and manufacturing technology," said Sachin Katti, senior vice president and general manager of the Network and Edge Group at Intel. "We look forward to working with Ericsson, an industry leader, to build open, reliable and future-proof networks."

In Intel's roadmap, 18A is the most advanced of five nodes in four years. After introducing RibbonFET and PowerVia in Intel 20A, the company will bring the innovative ribbon architecture and improved performance to 18A. These technologies will help Intel regain leadership by 2025 and improve future offerings for its customers.

The future is open and scalable

As 5G continues to roll out, the future lies in fully programmable, open, software-defined networks powered by the same cloud-native technologies that transformed the data center, offering unprecedented flexibility and automation.

To achieve the best performance, innovation and global scalability, the industry must collaborate and further synchronize network specifications as part of a global set of standards. Intel and Ericsson are collaborating with other leading technology companies to bring these benefits to their customers as they move toward an industrial-scale open RAN (Open Radio Access Network).
